電気通信サービスにおいて、我国では最近二つの重点目標であった積滞解消および全国即時化を達成した。社会活動の高度化、多様化により顧客の新サービスへの要求はますます増大する方向にあり、これらに応えるためには既存電話網の高度化を早急に進める必要がある。

我国においては、加入者の約85％がクロスバ交換機に収容されており、網への機能追加について、布線論理だけで対応していたのでは、おのずとサービス内容にも制限があり、顧客のニーズに対応するうえで限界がある。

【解　説】
・ 積滞解消：　the elimination of unfilled telephone demand backlog

・ 全国即時化：the accomplishment of a complete, nationwide subscriber dialing service

・ 社会活動の高度化・多様化：　the increasing diversity and sophistication of modern social activity (modern は文脈上つけた形容詞です)。

・ サービス内容：　the nature of new services （と解釈する）

この例題は、技術用語の和文の意味がよく分かったとしても表現はさほど容易ではない例題の一つとして挙げました。

「収容されている」　are (is) accommodated と訳されることが多いようですが、ここでは、are (is) served でもよいでしょう。収容されているということは、その交換機のサービスを受けているということと同義ですから。

「布線論理だけで対応していたのでは、おのずとサービス内容にも制限があり、・・・・」の意味としては、「新しいサービスに対応するのに配線をやり直すなどのハードウェア的な処置をとっていたのでは、そこにおのずから限界がある」ということです。

和文の構造をそのまま真似すると、Coping with the problem simply by wired logic naturally imposes restrictions on the nature of services to be provided となりますが、やはり英語国民に読ませるレベルの英語ではないようです。ではどう書けばよいかは、readable English の一例としての「訳文」をご検討ください。残りの文章の訳し方についても同様です。

【訳　文】
The Japanese telephone network has recently fulfilled two major telecommunications goals: the elimination of unfilled telephone demand backlog and the accomplishment of a complete, nationwide subscriber dialing service. 取扱説明書の中のこのような技術解説は、命令形とか “you” や “we” を使わない表現が一般的です。そのため三人称表現がよく使われ、どうしても受動態が多くなってしまいます。

また、この種の翻訳は内容がある程度理解でき、術語さえ分かれば簡単に翻訳できると言えるでしょう。構文や表現はそれほど難しくはないからです。

言い方を変えれば、分からない術語は辞書を引き、原文の文構造をほぼ移し変えて、淡々と書いていけばよいので、翻訳者にとっては面白みに欠ける仕事だとも言えます。

今までこの本の中で「翻訳は単なる原文の模倣ではない、創造的要素がかなりある」と言い続けてきたのですが、今回の例題は稀なケースとなりました。

実務翻訳の現場でこの種の和文原稿を与えられる翻訳者はそう多くはないはずです。仮に術語は全て分かり文章の意味もよく分かったとしても、その表現方法に苦しむものです。また、和文が拙く、解読するのに時間がかかり、苦しみながら翻訳しているケースのほうがずっと多いと思います。

【訳　文】
THEORY OF OPERATION
　The block diagram in Fig.1 will be used in the following description of the theory of operation of this instrument.
　The AC-5100X incorporates a microprocessor and sets measurement and display conditions by keyboard operation. The data supplied from the keyboard is read into the microprocessor, which controls each circuit according to the set conditions. Input signal data from the probe chips (channels 1 to 7, 8 to F ： and qualifiers Q1 and Q2) are compared with the threshold voltage previously set in the comparators. 【問題】次の和文を英訳してください。

自分の考えをドキュメントによって他人に間違いなく伝えるということは、非常に難しいことである。たとえ完璧なドキュメントであっても、書き手と読み手の知識や考え方の相違、読み違いなどの原因によって正しく伝わるとは限らない。

【解　説】
・ 自分の考え：　one’s ideas, one’s thought

・ 間違いなく：　accurately

・ 伝える：　convey, report, deliver, communicate, transmit, tell, impart などとある中で、ここでは最初のconvey (one’s ideas) がよいです。

・ 正しく伝わるとは限らない→　「〜が意思疎通をひずませることもあり得る」　〜にあたるところは、例えば・・・・・、misreading of it (may distort communication) です。

最初の文章は、ただ素直に英語に変換しても読むに耐える英文ができあがります（このようなときばかりであると翻訳には苦労はないのですが・・・・）。例えば、次のように；

“It is extremely difficult to convey one’s ideas accurately to others by means of documents.”

次の文書の副詞節にあたるところも、大方が受験英語でさんざん練習させられてきているのでやさしいでしょう。

“No matter how perfect the document itself may be” か　“Even if ( またはIf ) the document itself is perfect” というような訳に誰が訳してもなるでしょう。

このうち筆者は後者を採ります。理由は、”perfect” に “how” （どのくらい）という程度をあらわす言葉を使うことに抵抗を感じるからです。

「完全はひとつ」という概念であって、それがどれくらい完全であるかと、「完全」がいくつもあるかのような印象を与えるのは論理的矛盾でしょうから。

ただこれにも自信はありません。今机上に The Random House College Dictionary という英英辞典があります。その表紙にある英句を見て、上記の筆者の考えは独断というものであろうかと一度は考えてみました。

その英句とは：

“The most complete, authoritative, up-to-date desk dictionary.”

“perfect” と “complete” は意味または使い方に相違があるのではと、「新英和中辞典」（研究社）を引いてみました。

“perfect”
1. 完全な (complete) 、申し分のない、理想的な
【語法】　通例perfect(ly) は、「完全な（に）」の意味では比較変化はないが、「完全に近い」あるいは単に「優秀な、すばらしい (excellent)」の意味のときには、比較級・最上級の形が用いられる：”a more perfect example” （より完全な「すばらしい」例）

一方、”complete” についても同じようなことが書いてありました。したがって「程度」を意識して表現したいときには、比較級・最上級を使えるということが言えます。本問の “content” では、”Even if the document itself is perfect” と表現した方がよいと判断しました。

次に移りましょう。「書き手と読み手の知識や考え方の相違、読み違いなどの原因によって」は、いわゆる副詞句です。

これをそのまま、”By reason of” とか “For reasons of “ とかで始めないで、副詞句を名詞にして書き始めたらうまくいきます。

“Rain prevents us from going on a picnic.” （雨が降っているのでピクニックに行けない）と同じことです。

さて、その名詞ですが、あとの方の「読み違い」を先に出して "misreading of it" とし、「書き手と読み手の知識や考え方の相違」は、

”differences in background knowledge and interpretation between the writer and the reader”

を接続詞 “or” でつなぎ、

“……, misreading of it, or differences in background knowledge and interpretation between the writer and the reader”

とこれを主語とします。

「正しく伝わるとは限らない」にあたるところは、”may distort communication” とすると、うまくきまります。

以上をまとめて訳文とします（ “by means of” は “through the medium of” にかえる）。

【訳　文】
It is extremely difficult to convey one’s ideas accurately to others through the medium of documents. Even if the document itself is perfect, misreading of it, or differences in background knowledge and interpretation between the writer and the reader, may distort communication.

【問題】次の和文を英訳してください。

トップダウン・アプローチの重要性はシステム開発に限ったことではない。多人数で何か目的を持った作業を行う際には、必ずと言っていいほど必要になるアプローチである。例えば、一般の書物を数人で執筆する場合には、目次の設定、各章や節の目的と内容の定義、用語の定義などがまず行われ、その後で分担執筆を行えば、読みやすい一貫性のある書物となる。

【解　説】
・ トップダウン・アプローチの重要性はシステム開発に限ったことではない　→　トップダウン・アプローチは重要である、システム開発においてだけでなく・・・・・・・と次の文章に続けていくと、慣用句 not …… but が使えます。

・ 作業：　project がこの context では最もよくあてはまる語でしょう。

・ 多人数で何か目的をもった作業：　any project in which a large number of people work toward a set goal

・ 必ずと言っていいほど必要になるアプローチである：　前に「重要である」と言っているので（文の組み合わせ方によっては、既にその意味のことは表現できているので）この部分は特に表面に出して訳す必要はないであろうと判断しました。

・ 一般の書物：　an ordinary book ですが、単に a book でもそんなに意味は外れないと思います。

・ 目次の設定：　setting up the table of contents

・ 各章や節：　（直訳では） each chapter and section ですが、chapter も section も同じ意味ですので、each chapter で十分でしょう。

・ 目的と内容：　purpose and content 内容の方は普通は複数で contents となります（The Random House College Dictionary には Usually, contents. (a) something that is contained : the contents of a box. (b) The subjects, topics, chapters, etc., covered in a book or document と「形」と「意味」を説明している）が、ここでは purpose が単数で、しかも content が juxtapose (to place close together or side by side, esp. for comparison or contrast) されているので単数の形をとる方がよいと判断しました。

・ 用語の定義：　（直訳すれば）defining terminology となりますが、直前に defining the purpose and content of each chapter と使ったので、また、ここでは数人の執筆者が主語であるので agreeing on terminology とする方が読みやすいでしょう。

・ 分担執筆を行う：　(each author) writes his separate (or assigned) part.

・ 読みやすい：　easy to read

・ 一貫性のある：　consistent

以上を総合して、訳文にまとめていけばよいのですが、その前に直訳文を示すことにします。【訳文】と比べてみてください。

[直　訳]
The importance of the top-down approach is not limited to the task of system development. This approach is almost always necessary when several people perform a project with a certain purpose. Suppose a case where several persons write a book. They should first set up the table of contents, define the purpose and content of each chapter, define all terms, and then if each author writes his assigned part, the book will be easy to read and consistent.

これでどこが悪いのでしょうか。一つだけ直したいところを指摘するとすれば、when several people perform a project ではなくて、when several people work on a project でしょう。そのほかは、次に示す訳文と比較して、よりよい英文を to be accurate, to be intelligible, and to be readable という翻訳の必要条件に照らしてお考えください。

The top-down approach is important not just in system development but in any project in which a large number of people work toward a set goal. For example, when a group of authors divide the task of writing a book, they should begin by setting up the table of contents, defining the purpose and content of each chapter, and agreeing on terminology; then each author writes his separate part. If this procedure is followed, the book will be consistent and easy to read.

【問題】次の和文を英訳してください。

新しいシステムを開発しようとする場合に、いきなり入出力処理ルーチンの詳細を考える人はいないであろう。一般に、新規システムを計画し設計していく過程では、原則的に全体から細部へとトップダウンに開発が行われている。

【解　説】
・ 新しいシステムを開発する：　develop a new system

・ いきなり：　suddenly, abruptly （ということになるが、直訳がおかしいことは何度も述べてきたとおり）。　ここは「いきなり・・・・・を考える」をひとまとめにして、start with ……と訳すとうまくいきます。

・ 入出力処理ルーチン：　I/O handling routine

・ 計画し設計する：　（ここでは）design だけでよいでしょう（ときには plan and design というときも）。

・ 原則的に：　in principle と訳すのが普通ですが、前に「一般に」とあるので、こういう意味がダブるような語は、ひとまとめにして、意味をとって、The general rule is to take 〜　と文章を書き始めます。

・ 全体：　（これも意味を考えると）the system as a whole となります。

・ 細部：　（従って）its parts となります。details と訳されることもあるでしょう。

以上、大方の説明はしてしまったので、例によりまず直訳文（draft）をお目にかけましょう。

When developing a new system, there wouldn’t be anyone who starts to consider the details of the I/O handling routines. Generally speaking, in the process of planning and designing a new system the entire system is developed in principle on a top-down basis and its parts are then considered.

ロジック信号は使われる論理素子の動作信号レベルをHIGH(1)、LOW(0)の２値に弁別し、半導体メモリに記憶され、希望の表示フォーマット（タイムチャート形式、ステート形式、マップ形式）で再び読み出され表示します。

まず、直訳してみると次のようになります。

最初のパラグラフはほとんど直す必要のないほどよくできています。（直訳してうまくいく場合もたまにはある）。ただ、…….. and analyzes time interrelations のところを analyzes their time interrelations とすればもう少しよくなります。

問題は次のパラグラフで、「ロジック信号は〜」の「は」がくせものです。これを主語の「は」ととると、上記の直訳文のような訳になってしまいます。ロジック信号が論理素子の動作信号レベルを High(1) と Low(0) に弁別するのではなくて、〜回路（隠されている）が論理素子の動作信号レベルを識別レベル (threshold level) と比較して high やlow に弁別するのです。こうしてできた結果をロジック信号（またはbinary digit-bit ）と言います。したがって、直訳文では遠く的を外れてしまいます。

この「は」は提題の「は」で、代表的な例をあげれば「象は鼻が長い」、「このクレーターは直径が100mである」などです。別の表現では「二重主語の文章」となりますが、本問の場合、 predicate に対する subject は隠されています。隠されている主語を表面に出すために、翻訳者はマニュアルの他の部分を調べて、なんとかその主語を探し当てねばならず、これは非常に time-consuming な仕事になることもあります。ここでは、その主語を無理に表面に出さないで、次のように訳す方法もあります。

A logic signal corresponds to the binary logic element operation signal levels High and Low, or 1 and 0. 続けて訳すと、These are stored in semiconductor memory, and can be read out as needed in the desired display format, i.e. timing chart, state, or map format.

最初のパラグラフも少し書き直して訳文とします。

英語国民には、意味は通じるかもしれませんが readable ではありません。一見して、自分達から見て foreigner の発想であると思うでしょう。では、どう書けば英語国民に natural ( or readable ) になるでしょうか。次の訳文で考えてみましょう。

Before removing the housing, unplug the instrument. Otherwise, high voltage in the printed-circuit boards near the CRT may cause a shock. Do not put your hands or any metallic object close to the high-voltage section, even though it is covered.

「ブラウン管に高い電圧が加わっているため」という和文を読んで、直ちに As a high voltage is applied to the CRT と訳さないようにしましょう。例の Business prevented me from attending the party. （用事があったのでそのパーティーには出席できなかった）という英語独特の表現法を思い出していただけばお分かりのとおり、ここは The high voltage of the CRT だけでよいのです（もちろん、英語でも副詞節を使って表現することもあります）。

・ 「微粒子が付着しやすく、黒く汚れてきます」：　これは直訳すれば　〜 tends to attract fine particles, soiling the screen ですが、〜 attracts dust onto the screen でよいと思います。

２つ目の文章は下の訳文を見ていただければ、英訳時の考え方が分かると思いますので解説は省略します。

The high voltage of the CRT attracts dust onto the screen. To clean it, remove the protection cover and filter and wipe the screen with a cloth dampened with alcohol, then make sure to wipe it with a dry cloth.

世の中には「逐語訳が原文に忠実な訳である」と考える人がいます。しかし、その人たちの真意が「自分勝手な訳を避けかつできるだけ原文に密着した訳のほうが良い」という点にあるならば、賛同できないこともありません。

しかし、今まで本書の中でも繰り返し述べてきたように、日本語・英語間の逐語訳は言語構造的に不可能と言えます。加えて「翻訳」には常識にかなった論理的な明晰さが求められます。翻訳には語学の勉強のほかに、物事の論理的な思考訓練が必要なのはそのためです。

たとえば本問の例で言うと、

というところが、英語国民に通じるかどうかが疑問です。実験段階と商業サービス（実施）段階との間には、あまりにも差がありすぎるからです。

いずれにしても、字句どおりに訳せば、それで正確な訳であるとは限りません。

以上の語句と英文法の知識そして多少の英作文の経験から組み立てていくと、次のようになります。

[直　訳]
In econometric model analysis, since a model is set on the basis of econometric theory, the sigh and magnitude of the individual coefficients may often be predicted before they are actually estimated. In such cases, it is the evaluation from economic theory (theoretical testing) that tests to see whether the result agrees with or contradicts the economic theory.

これでももちろん英語国民に通じる英語であると思いますが、論理的構成 (intelligible) と読みやすさ (readable) という観点からもう少し考えてみましょう。

・ 次の主節にあたるところは、it will often be possible to predict the sign and general size of the individual coefficients before they are actually estimated. と書くほうがよくなります。

・ 「そのような場合」というのは、和文ではすぐ前に「・・・・される場合がある」とあるためでしょうか、有効な表現法であるかもしれませんが、英文では、In such cases というのは、ないほうがかえって読みやすくなります。

・ 「推定を行った結果」を単に the result と訳していますが、これは正確さ (accuracy) という点から the results of the estimate とするほうがよいのではないでしょうか。

ここで少し話がそれますが、estimate と estimation の違いを英英辞典で調べてみましょう。 (The Random House College Dictionary)

estimate：　reckon, assess, value, evaluate, appraise
estimation：　judgement or opinion （例　文） In my estimation the boy is guilty （試　訳：　わたくしの判断では、その少年は有罪である）。

要するに、estimate にはいわゆる「見積り」という意味がありますが、estimation のほうにはそのような意味はむしろ薄れ、個人の意見とか判断という意味あいが強くなります。

話をもとにもどして、「推定を行った結果が、経済理論と矛盾していないかどうかをそれから検定することができる」という文章と「これがまさに経済理論的評価（理論的検定）である」に、最後の和文を分けて訳すこともできます。

ここでプロの翻訳の条件をまとめてみると、次のようになります。

・ to be accurate （正確であること）
・ to be intelligible （理解できること）
・ to be readable （読むにたえること）

【訳　文】
Since the models in used econometric model analysis are based on economic theory, it will often be possible to predict the sign and general size of the individual coefficients before they are actually estimated. The results of the estimate can then be tested to see whether they agree with or contradict the theory. This is what evaluation from economic theory (theoretical testing) consists of.

本問もやはり「語句がそろえば、原文を模倣して、淡々と英語句に変えていけばよい」との安易な翻訳態度で訳したものをまず示します。

これがなぜよくないかという理由、あるいは良否判定の基準には多分に主観的なものが入るので、いちいち理屈がつけられないことは既に述べてきました。以下にこの直訳文についてごく大雑把にコメントしてみます。

（１） individuals よりも individual men and women とする方が、読みやすいでしょう。

（２） For this reason と書く必要はないでしょう。

（３） Tend to appear というよりも、能力が違えばそういうことに違いがでてくるのは必然ですので、事実として書くほうが現実的です。すなわち、show up と書く方が的を射ています。

（４） 余分な語、したがって削除します。

（５） Therefore →　As a result

（６） プロジェクトがチームからできているというのは、言葉の使い方の間違いです。　When a project team consists of several members と直します。

（７） 和文は「開発工数」ですが、ここでは文脈からすぐに分かりますので、for development という句は不要です。

語句は以上で大体そろったので、早速、「直訳＝原文の模倣」を試みてみましょう。

[直訳]
As causes of very low productivity in software development, the following are thought of:
・ Too much time is needed to prepare documents.
・ Too much work is needed to prepare test data.
・ Turnaround time is too long in the use of computers.
・ Preparation work for using the computer is too complicated.

このような訳文は、おそらく英語を少し勉強した人であれば、簡単にできることでしょう。

分からない語は和英辞典を引いて、あとは日本語を機械的に英語に変換していくだけの作業だからです。

筆者の考えでは、このような訳文では、プロの翻訳とは言えません。また、依頼元の最終顧客である英語国民の手に渡った場合、なんとなく拒絶されるのではないでしょうか。

ただ、「意味さえまがりなりにも通じればよい」という顧客に対してのみ、いわゆる「商品」となり得る代物です。

では、どこが悪いのか、あるいはどこを直すべきか、一緒に考えていきましょう。

・ 次のようなことが考えられる：　このような文章が出てきた場合には、直ちに、”the following are ( is ) considered ( or thought of ) としないで、実際に示されている原因はどんなことで、いくつあるかなどを調べる必要があります。本問の場合、原因として列挙されている項目は４つあります。したがって次のように書くことができます。

Four factors often blamed for major losses in software development productivity are:

・　ドキュメント作成に時間がかかりすぎる：　Too much time is needed to prepare documents. 　→　Preparation of documents takes too much time.

まず、「翻訳は原文の模倣である」という考え方で直訳してみます。

このような訳文でも、「合格」というのであれば、翻訳は気楽な稼業と言えるでしょう。

では、どこがどのように悪いのかというと、いちいち理由をつけて説明するのは難しいのですが、英語国民は、自然な形ではそうは言わないというだけのことです。ひとつひとつ見ていきましょう。

・ approach methods →　approaches （前問参照）

・ not premised on →　not based on

・ This approach →　These approaches

この語の意味をランダムハウスの英英大辞典で調べてみると、次のようになります。

“the method used or steps taken in setting about a task, problem, etc.”

「仕事への取り組み方、問題の研究方法」というような意味ですから、あえて「方法」を訳す必要のないことは言うまでもありません。

・前提とする：　based on
ただし、本問のような前後関係のときだけ適用できます。

・〜の問題を工学的に改善しようとするソフトウェアエンジニアリングにおけるアプローチ方法は、大きく二つに分類できる：

これを直訳してみると、

Broadly classified, there are two types of methods of approach in software engineering to improving the problems of 〜 through engineering

となりますが、これでは“英単語を使って日本語を書いただけ”のもので、不自然な英語といわざるを得ません。

第一、”improving the problems” という表現はナンセンスですし、短い語句の中に "engineering" という語が2回でてくるのもうまくありません。もちろん必要があって、あえて繰り返す場合もあるのですが、この場合は適切とは言えません。

原作者の意図をくんで翻訳してみると、例えば次のようになります。

In attempting to solve the problems of 〜 through software engineering, two types of approaches can be taken.

・これは〜を前提とするものである：　These approaches are predicated on 〜.

旺文社の『英和中辞典』の中の用例を一つ紹介すると、

人間は人間の言語（英語や日本語、etc.）しか理解できないのに対し、機械は0と1の羅列である機械語しか理解できません。このギャップを埋める（ bridging the gap ）ため、interface（接触点とか嵌合部分と訳せばよいのでしょうか）があります。

高級言語（正確には高級プログラム言語 high-level programming language と言われています）で書かれたプログラム（source program）はコンパイル（compile）されて、すなわち翻訳されて機械語のプログラム（object program）となります。

この翻訳のために computer （普通は処理用コンピュータと同一のもの）と compiler というプログラムを使います。問題処理の前にこの翻訳という過程が入るため「マンマシンインターフェースを犠牲にして」という表現になったのでしょう。もっと簡単な例で言うと、keyboard も man-machine interface の一つです。

・ 生産性を犠牲にして：　アセンブラ言語は、プログラム言語の中では一番機械語に近い、ということは、人間にはそれだけ抵抗があります。すなわち使いにくいということです。使いにくければ、プログラム作成の生産性が低下することになります。

・ これらを両立させることができる：　these can be made compatible と訳すことはできますが、その意味は（筆者には）抽象的で漠然としています。そこで、意味をはっきり伝えるために、和文をもう一度読み直し、原作者が何を言おうとしているかをつきとめなければなりません。しかし、このところの筆者の解釈は、訳文のなかで示すことにします。

以上でこれまでに検討してきたことを反映させずに「原文がそこにあるから、翻訳なんて簡単だよ」という態度（方針）で訳した訳例１をまず示し、次にそれを三人称的に書き直した訳例２を、そして最後に「訳文」を示します。比較検討してください。同時に「翻訳とは単に語句の変換ではない。そこには創造的な何か（+α）がある」ということがお分かりいただければ幸いです。

If you intend to develop application programs that operate under control of TSS, so far you have had to write them either in a high-level language, sacrificing man-machine interface, or in assembly language using macros, sacrificing productivity. 【解　説】
難しい語は一つもないので、早速 draft を作ってみます。

Because almost one month has elapsed(*1) after(*2) this system started its operation(*3) we cannot fully evaluate the contribution of the system to our company business. However, we can infer(*4) how much we have been benefited by it, with some forecast(*5).

(*1) 　文脈から one month has hardly elapsed とするほうが良い。
(*2)　after ではなく since とするのが文法的です。
(*3)　単に started だけでも良いでしょう。
(*4)　「類推」は、もちろんこう訳してもよいかもしれませんが、直訳しているという感じがします。したがって全体の意味を取って、文章を作り変えることにします。
(*5)　この句の意味は、英語国民にはすぐには伝わりません。本問のように論文調の記述の場合は、 we cannot ……のように一人称表現ではなく、 its contribution to 〜 cannot be ……というように三人称表現の方が良いです。

「ある程度の予見を含めて、類推することはできる」の中の「予見」も「類推」もそれぞれ訳語はありますが、一緒にして “rough forecasts” としてはどうでしょうか。　……, but some rough forecasts can be made のように。

【訳　文】
Because one month has hardly elapsed since this system started, its contribution to our company’s operations cannot be accurately evaluated, but some rough forecasts can be made.

・ 諸元：　specifications, technical data などが考えられます。

・ 理論計算値：　calculated values

・ 実測値：　experimental values

・ 一致する：　coincide ( agree ) with

・ 打鍵寿命試験：　life test

・ 操作特性：　operational characteristics

・ 試作した結果ＡとＢがほぼ一致することが分かった：　Trial production showed that A coincided closely with B.

・ 試作したスイッチの打鍵寿命試験を行った結果、図３に示す特性が得られ、操作特性は極めて安定している。：
この文章では、下線の語は同じものを指していますので「図３に示すように、極めて安定した操作特性を持つことがわかった」と言い直してから、次のように訳します。

【訳　文】
Trial production based on these calculations showed that the calculated values coincided closely with the experimental values as shown in Fig.2.

・ 最新の：　the latest

・ 集積回路技術：　IC technology または、上に「最新の」とあるのでLSI technology としてもよいかもしれない。

・ 全面的に：　語句としては entirely であるが、これは使わない。

・ オフラインテスト機能：　offline test functions

・ 〜の充実を図り：　このような表現は意味をとって訳す必要がある。

・ 高信頼性：　high reliability

本問題文は、あるマニュアルのほんの一部の抜粋であるため、その意味がつかみにくいかもしれません。例えば「何の」信頼性が高くなったのか不明です。このため、次のように書きたくても、主語に当たる語が不明のため、ここをブランクにしておかなければなりません。

（１） Through full employment of the latest IC technology and repletion of offline test functions, ________ is highly reliable.

あるいはここをぼかして、
（２） High reliability is achieved through full use of the latest IC technology and complete offline test functions.

しかし、実際には前後関係からこの文章で何が主語になっているかはすぐにわかるので（本問の場合は、computer terminal と仮定してみると）次のように書くことができます。

なお、（1）の repletion of 〜というのは直訳です。ただ「軍備の充実」というときは、これを使うことができるようです。repletion of armaments というように。
